(Pre) Leakycon 2011

Alright, I’ve been meaning to write a post about Leakycon, but really the week was SO much more than that. I had a seriously awesome week where I made three new best friends (How can you not when you’re sleeping in the same room as someone for a whole week… and driving them around!?) and while Leakycon was absolutely the headliner, I did a lot more than that. So here are the first few days before Leakycon!

Day 1 - Saturday July 9th

(blurryface Kendyl, me, Emily and Pam!)

Okay so I started this day really early. We all met up at the airport when my plane landed, around 12:05. I’d been at the airport or on a plane since 4pm my time (so 1pm EST!). I never met these girls before, I didn’t really know what to expect. I know that like them or not, I’d be spending more than a week in a hotel room with them, and if I didn’t like them I didn’t have to spend time at the event with them.

Luckily, we were all awesome people. We got along great right from the start, they saw me coming down from the stairs and instantly flagged me down. A ton of cross country flights arrived at the same time as mine so we had to wait about thirty minutes for my luggage to finally come down the rack. This gave us a lot of time to talk and really bond over absolutely nothing, but talk about our plans and what we wanted to do.

It was me, from San Francisco. Kendyl and Emily from Michigan and Pam from Guam! People came from everywhere for this conference, and our own Pam was an example of that.

After my giant green suitcase rolled around, we all headed to the car rental kiosk. After some talking, we upgraded to a medium SUV (we needed the extra room) and paid $200 extra because none of us were over 24. That wasn’t too bad, I ate all the extra charges, but it meant that I would be the only drive all week which ended up not being too bad!

After we got the name of the car we were aiming for, we went out INTO THE CRAZY HUMIDITY even though it was 1am by this point, and went for the car. We found the section of the parking lot he said it’d be in…. and there weren’t any cars there. In the “large” suv section there was a car and it was parked really strangely, so … we took it. Once we got to the kiosk where a lady scans your card and lets you through we all held our breath, because it was very possible this wasn’t the car we were meant to take, but luckily it worked. BONDING EXERCISE.

We ended up at Dennys before heading to the hotel by accident, I took the wrong exit off the highway and ended up outside of one, so we went in. The cutest thing is that Pam knew all of these American jingles for restaurants and businesses but had never been to them, so she was really exited to see one, and get to go inside of one! It was adorable.

We ate our foods, and then set off for the hotel. Which turned out to be about a mile from the hotel that Leakycon was in, which was really awesome planning on Kendyl’s part because it was super cheap to stay for the week, and was still super close. We all got some of our stuff unpacked, said goodnight, and prepared for the next day!

Day 2 - Sunday July 10th

This was our ‘day off’, really the only day we’d have to relax for a whole week, so we got up late and didn’t really have a major plan. We just knew we had to go to a mall for Pam, she had to buy some stuff, and had never been to an American mall and really wanted to go.

First we got lost and took about an hour to find any mall and then we ended up at this really strange fake mall. There was nothing inside but a movie theatre, but it was giant. All the places were stores should be were signs saying STORE COMING SOON, and overall the entire place gave me the creeps.

Eventually we found ourselves at the Mall of Florida (great name) where Kendyl played shopping buddy to Pam who was having difficulties, while Emily and I formed an intense friendship over animal prints in H&M and hiding in the racks at J.C Penny’s.

They thought the day was over when we left the mall, but it wasn’t. We had one more thing to do. From our hotel you could see this popular tourist attraction in Florida called the slingshot. They literally just load you into this little harness thing, and fling you into the air. I decided that the girls had to do it (I had the last time I was in Florida!) and we all went. They didn’t want to, they were far too afraid, but I helped them (forced) to overcome it, and I think now they’re happy about it. I’m not really sure..

Day 3 - Monday July 11th

DISNEYWORLD. I love Disney. I could go every day, I think. Even though it felt five hundred degrees and I’m surprised none of us died.

We left the hotel at around 9am to get there, since I had the plan to get us around the park as fast as possible and still see all of the fun stuff. We rushed for Space Mountain, got fast passes, and then went to the other fun things in Tomorrowland.

Did I mention that it was SO HOT.

Eventually we ended up in the teacups, which I’m very serious about. We spun so fast, that I think no one could really move in any direction. There is a video of this that I have to find and post, I will soon!

No Disney trip is complete without a trip in It’s a Small World! The happiest cruise that ever sailed ;).

Eventually, it rained. We got soaked. Like really, really, soaked. Emily was drying things from her purse for a couple of days after this. On the way walking around drying out, there was an outdoor dance party. Emily and I made an awesome dance, and then she lost her sunglasses. Somewhere along the lines, this happened.

I know, I look really serious about this dance. It was a bunch of 10 year olds, and us, but we were really breaking it down.

We made our way to the awesome light show and parade, and then saw the fireworks where I cried during “If you wish upon a star” like I always do.

This was our first day of being out the entire day, not getting back to the hotel until 2am but it was not the last.
